Questions We Get a Lot
Wood-burning models produce a traditional crackling fire with radiant heat that many people find more immersive, but they require a supply of dry wood and produce ash that needs clearing after each use. Propane gas fire pits ignite with a valve turn, produce no ash, and are easier to shut off quickly — a meaningful convenience on a covered patio or in areas with burn restrictions. Your local fire codes and how often you want to manage the fire itself are the two most useful filters when deciding.
Limestone is naturally dense and handles outdoor exposure well, though a fitted cover is advisable in climates with prolonged freeze-thaw cycles or heavy rainfall, as standing water in the bowl accelerates surface wear over time. Dark grey iron is durable but benefits from a weatherproof cover during extended periods of non-use to prevent surface oxidation. Neither material requires moving indoors, but a cover extends the appearance and lifespan of both.
Propane tanks are not included and are sourced separately — standard 20 lb tanks (the type used for outdoor grills) are the most common pairing and are widely available at hardware and home improvement stores. The connection hardware on most propane fire pits is designed for this tank size, but it is worth confirming the fitting type in the product specifications before purchasing a regulator or hose adapter.
Retreat Nexus offers 30-Day Returns — full details, including the process for damaged-in-transit items, are outlined in our Return Policy. If your order arrives with visible freight damage, documenting it at the time of delivery with photos is the most useful first step before contacting us. We recommend reviewing the Return Policy page for the exact steps so the process moves as quickly as possible.
About Our Fire Pits
An outdoor fire pit does one thing well: it makes an exterior space worth staying in after dark and into cooler months. The category divides cleanly into two fuel types. Wood-burning fire pits — whether freestanding bowls, modular stone kits, or cast iron designs — produce radiant heat from an open flame and carry the ritual and sensory quality that many buyers are specifically after. Gas and propane fire pits trade some of that atmosphere for convenience: consistent flame, no ash management, and the ability to extinguish instantly. Material construction matters more outdoors than in any interior setting. Iron, limestone, and powder-coated steel each handle weather differently, and the weight and footprint of a fire pit determines where it can realistically sit on a deck, patio, or lawn. A buyer choosing between these types should think about how often they will actually tend a fire, whether their local area has open-burn restrictions, and how much clearance their intended site provides. The right choice is usually the one that removes friction from use rather than adding it.
